DEAN'S AWARD - SYLLABUS
Grades and Reports
The candidate should choose and prepare the following:
- Two contrasting hymns, one with four lines to a verse, and one with six or more lines to a verse. Candidates over the age of 15 years must be prepared to sing an alternative part of their choice in one of the hymns. This includes sopranos, who must be prepared to sing the alto line if requested by the examiners. The examiners will ask the candidate to sing a verse unaccompanied in one of the hymns.
- A psalm of at least six verses and the Gloria.
Anglican chant or plainsong or a responsorial psalm will be accepted.
- A short anthem of one or more parts (see recommended music list and notes for choir trainers).
Candidates may sing the part of their choice.
- The candidate will be asked to sing unaccompanied at sight a psalm chant, hymn tune or a piece of music of equivalent difficulty.
- The examiners may ask the candidate technical questions arising from the music performed (e.g. note values, time signatures, etc)
- The examiners will test the candidate's knowledge of the liturgical year, in particular the seasons and festivals.
- The examiners will require the candidate to respond to aural tests, including singing the notes of two and three note chords and singing or clapping phrases after they have been played over twice on the piano.
